De Sony A7 IV is een full frame systeemcamera met een full frame sensor (35.9 x 23.9 mm).
De camera heeft een nieuw ontwikkeld 33MP Exmor R BSI CMOS-sensor en BIONZ XR-beeldprocessor. Deze bieden meer snelheid, betere prestaties, verbeterde ruisonderdrukking en een groter dynamisch bereik (geadverteerd 15 stops). Ook kan de camera 4K 4:2:2 10-bit tot wel 60p filmen.
Bovendien heeft de camera Sony's Cinetone kleurprofiel dat bekend staat om 'True-to-Life' skin colours en kun je ook filmen in S-log2 en S-log3, hierdoor heb je meer controle tijdens het color graden. Net als de meeste Sony systeemcamera's heeft de camera Real-Time Eye AF, Eye and Face Detection en Subject Touch Tracking. Hierdoor is de camera ideaal in gebruik met een gimbal en voor Run and Gun shooters.
Uniek aan de camera is zijn Heat Map functie. Met deze functie kun je door middel van een 'Heat Map' zien waar je focus ligt.
Verder heeft de camera een full size HDMI-input, één CFexpress Type A/SD (UHS-II) kaartslot, één SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II) en een USB Type-c input waarmee je de camera kunt opladen.
Ten slotte weegt de camera slechts 658 gram en zijn de afmetingen 131.3 x 96.4 x 79.8 mm.
Let op: De Sony A7IV heeft last van overheating bij langdurig filmen in 4K60P in combinatie met dual card recording. Je kunt dit enigszins tegengaan door de dual card recording feature uit te schakelen en de auto off feature van normal naar high te veranderen.
